The $32B Bet on Safe Superintelligence: Why Alphabet and Nvidia Are Powering Ilya Sutskever’s Next AI Frontier

In a move that could reshape the very future of artificial intelligence, Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) — the stealth-mode startup founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever — has raised over $2 billion, pushing its valuation to an eye-popping $32 billion.

But unlike typical AI unicorns racing to commercialize large language models or enterprise tools, SSI has a singular goal: build the world’s first safe superintelligence — no distractions, no pivoting, no monetization rush.

So why are tech giants like Alphabet and Nvidia throwing their weight (and wallets) behind a company that hasn’t launched a product or made a dime?

    A Mission Without Compromise

Founded in mid-2024 by Ilya Sutskever, Daniel Levy (also ex-OpenAI), and Daniel Gross (ex-Apple AI lead), SSI was built around one clear philosophy: the creation of superintelligence must not come at the cost of safety. This belief isn’t just a tagline — it’s embedded into the company’s DNA.

    In their own words:

“We approach safety and capabilities in tandem, as technical problems to be solved through revolutionary engineering and scientific breakthroughs.”

Operating from Palo Alto and Tel Aviv, the company is staying lean, hiring only elite researchers and engineers. There are no sales teams, no product managers, no growth marketing leads. It’s research-first, and research-only.

The Hardware Strategy: Betting on TPUs Over GPUs

Interestingly, while most AI labs swear by Nvidia’s GPUs, SSI is taking a bold path: it’s building its infrastructure on Alphabet’s TPUs (Tensor Processing Units). This may seem counterintuitive — given Nvidia’s dominance — but it’s a calculated move.

Google Cloud Managing Director Darren Mowry explained:

“The gravity is shifting to foundational builders. We’re giving them access to the most advanced computing infrastructure.”

This partnership gives SSI early and exclusive access to Google’s best AI hardware, possibly helping it outpace rivals in efficiency, cost, and performance.

Why the AI World Is Watching Closely

The news comes at a time when conversations around AI safety, alignment, and long-term impact are louder than ever — particularly in the wake of internal tensions at OpenAI and broader concerns about AI outpacing human control.

Many in the tech community see SSI as a corrective response to the commercialization-first mindset of other labs. The question now becomes: can a company with no commercial incentives really solve the hardest problem in AI?

Lux Capital partner Shahin Farshchi summed it up well in a statement:

“Safe Superintelligence isn’t building another chatbot. They’re aiming for the summit — and building the oxygen tank on the way up.”

    What’s Next?

With $2B+ in the bank and no short-term product pressure, SSI will focus on:

    • Scaling its elite research team
    • Building next-gen AI infrastructure
    • Advancing both capability and alignment research
    • Leading global discussions on AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) risk

Of course, the secrecy around their work leaves open questions — what exactly are they building? When will we see results? And will safety remain a priority as pressure grows?

What’s clear is this: the AI arms race has entered a new phase — one where building safely, not just quickly, might define the winners.
