Meet Maya & Miles: are these emotionally intelligent AIs the future of voice technology?

In a world increasingly driven by artificial intelligence, a new contender has entered the arena—one that promises not just smart responses, but emotionally aware interactions. Sesame, a voice AI startup founded in 2023 by Ankit Kumar, Brendan Iribe, and Ryan Brown, is raising eyebrows with its lifelike digital assistants, Maya and Miles.

But what exactly sets Sesame apart in a crowded voice assistant market already dominated by the likes of OpenAI, xAI, Amazon Alexa, and Google DeepMind?

    Demo

Built on LLaMA, powered by Empathy

At the heart of Sesame’s innovation is its decision to build on Meta’s LLaMA (Large Language Model Meta AI)framework. While many AI models today can understand language, Sesame’s Maya and Miles aim to feel it. Trained on over 1 million hours of audio, these assistants go beyond basic commands—they can adapt to your tone, understand context, and even reflect your emotions back at you.

Imagine a virtual assistant that softens its tone when you’re stressed, or adds enthusiasm when you’re celebrating—that’s the kind of future Sesame envisions. In an era of emotionally disconnected tech, this presents a compelling proposition: Can empathy be engineered?

Maya and Miles: More than just voices

So, who exactly are Maya and Miles?

They are not your typical voice bots. Early demos suggest a hyper-realistic, near-human vocal presence. Whether you’re having a casual chat or troubleshooting your smart device, these AIs strive to respond like an actual person who cares. This opens the door to applications in mental health, education, customer service, and entertainment, where emotional intelligence is not a luxury—but a necessity.

The Funding Frenzy: Is Sesame on track to become a Unicorn?

Sesame is not just innovating—it’s attracting serious investor attention. The company recently raised $47.5 million in Series A funding, led by the renowned VC firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). Now, insiders report that Sesame is eyeing a massive $200 million+ funding round, a move that could swiftly propel it into unicorn status.

With such backing, the natural question is:
What does a $200M investment say about the future of emotionally intelligent AI?

Facing the Giants: Can Sesame Compete?

The voice AI space is evolving rapidly. Giants like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Amazon Alexa are pushing boundaries, while startups like Anthropic, SoundHound AI, and Replika are innovating on specialized fronts.

So, how does Sesame hope to compete?

Its bet lies in emotional authenticity. While competitors focus on scaling knowledge and utility, Sesame zooms in on the human experience. By prioritizing tone, sentiment, and nuance, Sesame might carve a niche that others have overlooked.

    So What’s Next?

As the voice assistant space becomes a battleground for innovation, the real question emerges:
Will users choose “smarter,” or will they prefer “more human”?

Maya and Miles aren’t just tools—they’re companions, colleagues, and, possibly, confidants. If Sesame delivers on its promise, the days of robotic, impersonal AI could soon be behind us.
