Industry Overview (Updated August 2024)
- The U.S. Media and Entertainment (M&E) industry is the largest in the world at $649 billion (of the $2.8 trillion global market) and is projected to grow to $808 billion by 2028 at an average yearly rate of 4.3% (PwC 2024).
- The M&E industry has been steadily recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, with global revenue from live events such as music performances and cinema box office rising year-on-year in 2023 by 26% and 30.4%, respectively. Live events represented 38.6% of the net increase in M&E spending in 2023 (PwC 2024).
- The M&E industry is comprised of businesses that produce, distribute and offer ancillary digital services and products for: the Motion Pictures, Television programs and Commercials along with Streaming Content, Music, Video and Audio recordings, Broadcast, Radio, Text and Book Publishing, eSports and Video Games sectors.
- In 2021, total copyright industries added 2.9 trillion dollars to the U.S. economy (accounting for 12.52%) and employed over 16 million workers. These industries grew on average 4.67% a year, while the U.S. economy as a whole averaged 1.76% annually (IIPA 2022).
